The Baillie/Lisney Duo combines the talents of two of Britain’s finest artists – acclaimed soloists and chamber musicians renowned for their virtuosity, integrity and temperament. They have established a thriving international career together, performing a wide range of music, achieving special notice for their recent Beethoven concerts and recordings and inspiring significant additions to the cello and piano repertoire.
Alexander Baillie is one of the world’s leading cellists, as evidenced by his appearances with many of Britain’s finest conductors, such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Sir Alexander Gibson; his highly respected discography, including the Beethoven sonatas with James Lisney; and by his contribution to contemporary music, working with such figures as Sir Michael Tippett, Hans Werner Henze, Colin Matthews, Toru Takemitsu and Henri Dutilleux.
“Technical challenges do not worry him: he phrases with breadth, communicates with an intensity that refuses to let up for an instant and seems to possess the most minute control over the astonishing range of timbres he is able to produce.“
